With mental health challenges like anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation reaching alarming levels among teens and young adults, Indiana University South Bend (IUSB) is taking proactive steps to address the crisis on college campuses. The university is excited to announce it has received a three-year grant from the Valinhos Foundation, based in South Bend, to implement a comprehensive mental health initiative.
This funding will enable IUSB to create a “stepped-care” approach to mental health, providing students with access to a range of care, support, and community resources. The initiative is aimed at supporting students who are experiencing emotional and financial distress, as well as those lacking family or community support. By addressing these issues, the university hopes to improve the overall well-being of its student body.
Key Components of the Mental Health Initiative:
Stepped-Care Approach: The grant will help IUSB develop a multi-tiered mental health care strategy, ensuring students have access to appropriate levels of support based on their needs.
National Recognition and Partnerships: The funding will allow IUSB to gain national recognition as part of an effort to promote emotional health and prevent suicide among teens and young adults. This recognition is crucial for positioning the university as a leader in student mental health.
Internship Opportunities: The grant will fund paid internships focused on mental health and wellness, providing students with hands-on experience in the field while promoting awareness and support on campus.
New Campus Resource Position: A new role will be created to help connect students with mental health resources, both on campus and within the broader community. This position will be vital for ensuring students know where and how to seek help when needed.
IUSB’s Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement, Kory Vitangeli, expressed the university’s gratitude, stating, “We are immensely grateful for this opportunity to better serve our students. The support from the Valinhos Foundation will make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students by improving their access to mental health care and resources.”
This initiative underscores IUSB’s commitment to addressing the mental health crisis on campus and supporting the emotional well-being of its student population. With the increase in mental health challenges among young people, this grant provides the university with the tools to make a lasting impact.
