Open Parachute Mental Health Program Reaches Milestone of 20,000 South Australian Students

by Daphne Watson

The Open Parachute Mental Health Program has reached a major milestone, with over 20,000 South Australian students now participating. This accomplishment highlights the success of a collaborative effort between the Adelaide Crows Foundation and The Sebastian Foundation in addressing mental health challenges among children and youth.

The school-based initiative, which promotes resilience and well-being, is designed for students, educators, and parents. The program offers evidence-based video lessons led by clinical psychologist Dr. Hayley Watson, focusing on practical strategies to manage stress and emotional difficulties. These lessons aim to equip students with tools to overcome mental barriers throughout their lives.

In the past two years, participation in the program has surged by 340%, growing from 4,778 students to over 21,000 across 53 schools. This dramatic increase is attributed to the partnership between Open Parachute, the Adelaide Crows Foundation, and The Sebastian Foundation, who have worked together to reduce costs and expand access for schools and families.

Adelaide Crows Vice Captain, Reilly O’Brien, serves as one of the program’s ambassadors. O’Brien has been instrumental in delivering the Crows Resilience Talks, which were co-created by AFL players and Dr. Watson. His efforts were nationally recognized when he received the AFL’s Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award in 2024.

“It’s incredible to see the program reach 20,000 participants,” O’Brien said. “There’s amazing work being done in South Australian schools by the Crows Foundation and The Sebastian Foundation. This program is something I wish I had access to when I was in school. It’s a privilege to be involved and to see kids living happy and healthy lives.”

O’Brien added that his role as an ambassador has been deeply rewarding. “It’s an honor to go out to schools and discuss such an important topic. Being able to give back and influence kids in a positive way is one of the greatest privileges of being an AFL player.”

The continued success of the Open Parachute program is made possible through the support of key partners, including Open Parachute, The Sebastian Foundation, Thomas Foods International, and Variety SA.
