Santa Cruz Schools Open New Wellness Centers to Support Student Mental Health

by Daphne Watson

The Santa Cruz City School District has made significant strides this week in addressing student mental health with the opening of new wellness centers. The district held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Soquel High School for its new Wellness Center, a dedicated space designed to support students dealing with various mental health and social issues. This new center replaces a small, overcrowded room that previously served as a temporary solution.

Soquel High Principal Julia Hodges emphasized the connection between mental health and academic success, saying that if students aren’t mentally healthy, it’s challenging for them to perform well in school. The wellness center provides resources and support for students dealing with mental health issues, substance abuse, sexual health, and bullying, ensuring that they have the tools needed to succeed both in the classroom and beyond.

Samantha Mitchell, a wellness navigator at Soquel High, shared her experience working with students, saying that the center has helped students overcome various challenges. Many students who were initially hesitant to seek help now feel comfortable using the wellness center as a safe space. Freshman students Nevaeh Fellows and Jayden Ballard both expressed how valuable the center is to them, highlighting the personal support and guidance they’ve received from Mitchell.

In addition to the Soquel High Wellness Center, another ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at Harbor High School, and a wellness center is also planned for Santa Cruz High School next year. This initiative is part of the district’s ongoing effort to provide comprehensive support for students’ mental and emotional well-being.
