The Black Dog Institute has announced that registration is now open for its popular Mullets for Mental Health campaign, an initiative designed to raise funds for crucial mental health research in Australia. This national fundraising challenge encourages Australians to embrace their wild side by growing mullets in support of the 1 in 5 Australians who experience mental illness each year.
Raising Funds and Starting Conversations
Back and bolder than ever, Mullets for Mental Health is a fun and creative way to start important conversations around mental health. According to Tom Farrar, Campaign Manager for Mullets for Mental Health, the initiative is about more than just hair – it’s about sparking meaningful discussions and breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health.
“In Australia, 9 lives are lost to suicide every day – 7 of them men. Sadly, suicide remains the leading cause of death among Australian men aged 15-44, with rates even higher in regional and remote areas,” Farrar explained. “By taking part, you’re not only supporting Black Dog Institute’s vital suicide prevention research and programs but also standing in solidarity with those affected by mental illness.”
Participants are encouraged to rally their friends and grow a mullet, all while raising funds for better mental health. The initiative provides a lighthearted yet impactful way to get involved in mental health advocacy and support those in need.
Impact of Mullets for Mental Health
Since its launch in 2020, Mullets for Mental Health has seen over 35,000 participants grow mullets and raise more than $13.3 million for mental health research and initiatives. This year, the funds raised will continue to support the Black Dog Institute’s groundbreaking work, which includes suicide prevention research, the development of digital mental health tools for both adults and children, and community outreach programs aimed at increasing mental health awareness in schools.
Join the Movement
This April, the Black Dog Institute is calling on Australians of all hair types to join the movement. By growing a mullet, participants will not only support essential mental health initiatives but also raise awareness about the importance of mental well-being. It’s a fun, impactful way to show that mental health matters.
Registration for the event is now open. So, gather your mates, get your mullet growing, and help make a difference in the lives of those affected by mental health issues.
