Sonar Secures $2.4M in Pre-Seed Funding for AI-Powered Mental Health Platform for Teens

by Daphne Watson

Sonar Mental Health (“Sonar”), an AI-driven mental health platform designed to address the growing mental health crisis among adolescents, has successfully secured $2.4 million in pre-seed funding. The round was led by Nina Capital, with additional investment from GSR Ventures and J4 Ventures, and support from the Stanford University Social Impact Founder Fellowship.

This funding will be used to accelerate Sonar’s expansion across U.S. school districts, further invest in research and development, and enhance its app to continue providing scalable, effective preventative mental health support for young people.

The Growing Need for Adolescent Mental Health Solutions

Adolescent mental health has become a major concern in the U.S. Nearly half (49.5%) of adolescents experience a mental health disorder, and 20% face a major depressive episode annually. Despite the significant impact, the U.S. education system struggles to meet the mental health needs of students. Nearly 17% of high schools lack a school counselor, and 48 out of 50 states exceed the recommended student-to-counselor ratio, leaving hundreds of thousands of students without necessary support.

Many adolescents turn to platforms like ChatGPT for mental health help, but these solutions are not tailored to their specific needs and lack the required professional expertise. Existing virtual counseling services also remain difficult to scale and often fail to provide on-demand care.

Sonar’s AI-Powered Solution: A Scalable, Personalized Approach

Sonar’s innovative platform uses an AI-powered Wellbeing Companion, Sonny, to provide personalized mental health support to students via text messages. Sonny is designed to adapt to each student’s needs, addressing issues like academic stress, peer conflicts, and personal loss. With cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing techniques, Sonny engages with students in a judgment-free and accessible way.

Sonar integrates human oversight to ensure high-risk cases are flagged and escalated to professional counselors and psychiatrists, facilitating early intervention and ensuring students receive the support they need when they need it most.

Proven Impact and Growing Adoption

Sonar has already partnered with nine school districts across California, Texas, Illinois, Michigan, and Arkansas, reaching over 4,500 students. Schools that have adopted the platform report a decrease in student absenteeism, with between 20-40% of students actively engaging with Sonny. More than 75% of users report a 20% or greater increase in well-being, and 80% of conversations with Sonny feature moments of self-disclosure, indicating meaningful engagement.

Additionally, 98% of partner school districts anticipate increasing their mental health funding, signaling a strong belief in the value of Sonar’s proactive approach to mental health care.

With this latest round of funding, Sonar is poised to scale its efforts, bringing affordable, effective mental health support to even more students across the U.S., transforming how adolescent mental health care is delivered in schools.
