Austin Coffee Shops Join Forces to Raise Mental Health Awareness on Hi, How Are You Day

AUSTIN, TX — On January 22, 2025, 14 coffee shops across Austin will team up with the Hi, How Are You Project to promote mental health awareness and encourage open conversations about well-being. The initiative, which coincides with the birthday of late artist and songwriter Daniel Johnston, aims to inspire young people, especially those between 18 to 24, to talk about mental health while enjoying their daily coffee.

Daniel Johnston, who battled mental illness for much of his life, became a significant figure in the Austin music and arts scene. His legacy is honored through the Hi, How Are You Project, which works to educate young adults about the importance of managing mental health. Executive Director Robert Sanchez explained that the project’s mission is to create awareness and provide resources for young people to prioritize their mental well-being.

Sanchez shared more about the significance of Hi, How Are You Day: “We started Hi, How Are You Day to honor Daniel’s legacy and raise awareness about mental health. On January 22, coffee shops around the Austin area will distribute coffee in custom sleeves designed for the day, while a Daniel Johnston-inspired playlist plays in the background. It’s a way to spark a conversation, encouraging people to check in on each other and ask ‘How are you?’ with intention.”

The phrase “Hi, how are you?” holds special meaning in Austin, where it became iconic through Johnston’s artwork, including the mural he painted on the UT Austin campus. Sanchez emphasized the power of taking a moment to ask someone how they’re really doing. “Daniel always felt that everyone deserves the opportunity to be asked, ‘How are you here?’” he said. The event will encourage deeper conversations about mental health, making it more comfortable for people to open up.

In addition to the coffee shop activations, a benefit concert will be held on January 24 at the Paramount Theatre. The concert will feature Grammy-winning artist Madison Cunningham and renowned musician Andrew Bird, who will perform solo sets before coming together for a special collaboration. The event promises a beautiful night of music in honor of mental health awareness, with tickets still available for those interested.

Through these activities, the Hi, How Are You Project hopes to create an ongoing dialogue around mental health, helping to reduce stigma and encourage positive change.
