FALL RIVER, Mass. — In a significant move to address the mental health needs of students, Massachusetts is awarding over $5.5 million in grants to 60 school districts across the state. This funding, announced by Governor Maura Healey’s office, aims to improve students’ access to mental and behavioral health services, building stronger partnerships between schools and community-based mental health providers.

Tackling the Mental Health Crisis in Schools

Governor Healey emphasized that the mental health crisis, which worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic, has had a profound impact on students. She stated, “Improving students’ access to behavioral and mental health care is a priority for our administration.” The grants will help school districts forge connections with local mental health providers to ensure students have the support they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

Key Goals of the Funding

Expanded Access to Services: The funding will help districts increase access to mental health support, particularly for students facing stress, anxiety, and other behavioral challenges.

Collaboration with Community Providers: Schools will work closely with community-based mental health professionals to enhance the care and services available.

Professional Development: The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will also offer training to school staff to better recognize and address mental health issues among students.

Local Impact

Among the recipients of the grant, Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical High School in Taunton was awarded $43,800. The school plans to use the funds to expand access to virtual mental health support and to bring in a mental health speaker for students, helping to normalize conversations around mental health and provide valuable resources.

Other districts in Fall River, Taunton, and Foxborough will also benefit from the grants, which will go toward various initiatives aimed at creating a supportive and responsive mental health environment for students.

A Step Toward Long-Term Mental Health Solutions

These investments are part of a broader strategy to ensure that the mental and behavioral health of students becomes a top priority in Massachusetts’ schools. With continued support, the grants are expected to play a key role in helping students navigate the challenges of today’s complex world while fostering an environment where they can thrive.
